Abstract
Microneedles, as a novel transdermal drug delivery technology with the advantages of easy administration and high efficiency in delivery, have been reported to deliver various therapeutics including small molecules, nucleic acids, peptides, and proteins. Recent studies have demonstrated their ability to deliver novel biopharmaceuticals such as therapeutic cells (e.g. stem cells and immune cells). The application of microneedles could ameliorate the potential side-effects of systemic cell therapy, potentiate therapeutic efficacy on localized treatments, and improve compliance of patients. This article reviews recent advances in microneedle-based delivery of therapeutic cells like stem cells and immune cells, and discusses the potential challenges and future prospects regarding microneedles-based cell delivery and release systems.
